ABOUT / HISTORY
The Maidu People were geographically dispersed into various sub-groups who lived throughout valleys, foothills, and mountains of northeastern central California. The Nisenan people are a sub-group attributed to the Yuba area where the Center resides. In Maiduan languages, "maidu" is said to mean "person". As numerous arrowheads, spearheads, and pottery have been found on the property, we can only wonder what kind of settlements likely existed here on the actual land now being stewarded by the Center.
The Center recognizes and honors those who precede us. May we reflect this through our stewardship in the Now.

The Center itself first became a something back in 2008 when (founder and current Director of the Center), Adam DeFranco, followed the impulse to find, acquire, and begin developing a property as a forested refuge and portal for wisdom and truth.
Over the years, Adam + an ever-unfurling ensemble have continuously been serving this vision through the transforming of the 200-acres into what it is today. Step by step, intention by intention, collaboration by collaboration, synergy by synergy, transforming sacred, forested land into the portal it is to support people accessing and benefiting from it.
In many respects, the property is akin to a mini-State Park with the myriad of roads, trails, groves, nooks, vistas, cabins, lodges, campgrounds, clearings, elderberry groves, and more.
And yet — in many respects, these are still the Early Years!
So climb aboard and stay tuned.
With the "masticator" coming soon to clear and reveal (yet again)... with milling of lumber happening amidst it (having recently prepared nearly 35,000-lbs of 29' foot logs for the lodge)... and with some exciting structural developments to support the Center being and operating in the private — the current sites are on completing Geronimo Lodge next year via the Temple of Truth rising up from the Center's center (along with solar and septic for that area). Which will essentially complete Phase 1 of the Center, now available in its essential core:
Main House + Water + Solar +
Cabins + Lodge + Campground
In the meanwhile, the 5 cabins are available to drop in and replenish amidst the forests of northern California. And with summer's end comes logs a lit in the wood burning fireplaces as autumn / winter begin to arrive in their splendors.
So come and stay and be a part of / support the Center.
Any questions, reach out anytime.
Many thanks,
— Adam, and the rest of the Wisdom Retreat Center ensemble
